CSI provided multidisciplinary engineering design services for a key segment of the Lake City to St. Augustine Rails to Trails corridor, a roughly 40-mile, 12-foot-wide shared-use path being developed along an abandoned railroad bed in Putnam County, Florida.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

CSI designed the section of the trail extending 6.5 miles from Roberts Lane to the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) office, running parallel to SR 100 along the former rail corridor. The scope encompassed full construction plans, a major pedestrian bridge design, drainage and box culvert design, permitting, and traffic control coordination.


Pedestrian Bridge Design

A centerpiece of the project was the design of a 291-foot pre-engineered truss pedestrian bridge, replacing an existing railroad trestle. The structure consists of three 97-foot spans. CSI developed the design criteria and substructure design, and conducted preliminary structural analysis across multiple span arrangement alternatives to identify the optimal replacement configuration.


Drainage & Culvert Design

CSI also designed a concrete box culvert to replace a structurally deficient pipe culvert beneath the trail corridor, supported by bridge hydraulics analysis to ensure proper stormwater conveyance and structural performance.
