SR 228 & I-295 Interchange Improvement Project

Roadway Widening | Traffic Operations

This project delivered comprehensive operational and infrastructure improvements along State Road (SR) 228 at the I-295 Northbound and Southbound interchange, including I-295 NB off-ramp widening to enhance traffic flow, safety, and freight mobility.

Design services encompassed a full range of engineering disciplines, including roadway widening design, maintenance of traffic (MOT) planning, signing and pavement marking, bridge culvert design, traffic signalization, roadway lighting, geotechnical investigation, environmental permitting, cost estimating, and technical specification development.

Construction improvements included:

  • Auxiliary Truck Lane Addition: The existing 24-foot westbound lane along SR 228 was widened to construct a new 12-foot auxiliary lane, providing dedicated truck access to the I-295 Southbound on-ramp and improving heavy vehicle operations at the interchange.

  • U-Turn / Left-Turn Lane Construction: A new median turn lane was constructed by removing the existing 20-foot grassed median and installing a 4-foot concrete traffic separator between the eastbound and westbound travel lanes, improving intersection access and reducing conflict points.

  • Truck Turnaround Lane: A variable-width turnaround lane was constructed on the south side of SR 228 to accommodate safe large truck turnaround maneuvers, allowing westbound vehicles — particularly semi-trucks and commercial freight vehicles — to reverse direction and access the I-295 Southbound on-ramp.

Comprehensive design services included:

  • Roadway widening along SR 228 and I-295 interchange ramps

  • Maintenance of traffic (MOT) planning and design

  • Signing and pavement marking design

  • Structural design for widened roadway sections

  • Traffic signalization design and optimization

  • Roadway lighting design

  • Geotechnical engineering services

  • Environmental and agency permitting

  • Construction cost estimating

  • Technical specifications development
