St. Augustine Road Bridge

104' Continuous Slab Bridge Replacement

Client: Putnam County / FDOT District 2
Location: Over Julington Creek - Jacksonville, FL
Services: Bridge Design | Permitting | Post Design Services During Construction

This project delivered the design of a new 104-foot continuous slab bridge to replace the existing structure carrying St. Augustine Road over Julington Creek in the City of Jacksonville, Florida — combining structural innovation with extensive multi-agency environmental coordination.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The St. Augustine Road Bridge replacement over Julington Creek required careful structural design to accommodate site constraints and underground utility infrastructure while maintaining traffic during phased construction. The 104-foot continuous slab design, supported by AASHTO Type II prestressed concrete beam spans and a concrete pile-supported substructure, provides a durable, long-term solution for this Jacksonville waterway crossing. Engineering accommodations for 24" and 16" ductile iron pipes, along with an innovative mechanical splice system, allowed construction to proceed efficiently within tight phased-construction space limitations. The project's success also depended on close coordination across multiple environmental and regulatory agencies, ensuring full compliance with state and federal waterway protection standards.

Project Highlights & Key Outcomes

  • 104' continuous slab bridge designed to replace the existing structure

  • Two-span superstructure built with AASHTO Type II prestressed concrete beams

  • Concrete pile-supported substructure for long-term structural stability

  • Design accommodations made for 24" and 16" ductile iron pipes for utilities

  • Mechanical splice system incorporated into the substructure design to address anticipated space constraints during phased construction
